Eliminating Groupthink in Product & Beyond…
Each time I finish a book that has to do with Product Management, I take one excerpt and share any insights.
Last night, I continued to read Continuous Discovery Habits by Teresa Torres, and stumbled onto a quote that I could not wait to share until the very end. It relates not just to Product Management, but Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) as well.
“…𝕚𝕟 𝕚𝕟𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕖𝕤 𝕨𝕙𝕖𝕣𝕖 𝕨𝕖 𝕚𝕥’𝕤 𝕚𝕞𝕡𝕠𝕣𝕥𝕒𝕟𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕨𝕖 𝕖𝕩𝕡𝕝𝕠𝕣𝕖 𝕞𝕦𝕝𝕥𝕚𝕡𝕝𝕖 𝕡𝕖𝕣𝕤𝕡𝕖𝕔𝕥𝕚𝕧𝕖𝕤,𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕖𝕒𝕤𝕚𝕖𝕤𝕥 𝕨𝕒𝕪 𝕥𝕠 𝕘𝕖𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣𝕖 𝕚𝕤 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕖𝕒𝕔𝕙 𝕞𝕖𝕞𝕓𝕖𝕣 𝕥𝕠 𝕕𝕠 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜 𝕚𝕟𝕕𝕚𝕧𝕚𝕕𝕦𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕪.”
From launching and leading two Employee Resource Groups (ERG) for Women, I’ve seen it is sometimes not a safe place for my fellow female peers to feel completely comfortable and transparent.
This could also be said from someone that is new to Product Management and working with a diverse cross-functional team.
Typically groupthink takes hold due to the most boisterous person in the room. The thoughts of the introvert are typically ignored, dismissed, or simply not loud enough for others to hear.
The ideologic vast majority is simply not the majority in this case.
I now have an excellent idea on how to focus on the needs of each member, rather then just a select few.
Thank you Teresa. You may not have been aware of this, but you just gave me a different perspective on not one of my passions, but both of them!
